UNIVERSITY HILL IN OPOLE

Right in the city centre, next to Copernicus Square, lies one of the most beautiful places in the centre of Opole – University Hill. It houses a veritable pantheon of celebrities associated with the Opole Festival, Polish music, as well as the city and region. In addition to the artists' square on the hill, you can discover many historic sculptures that were saved from complete destruction thanks to Professor Stanisław Nicieja and the University of Opole. Agnieszka Osiecka, Wojciech Młynarski, Czesław Niemen and others, there is also a monument to the great theatre reformer Jerzy Grotowski. Meanwhile, among the historic sculptures that have been saved, one of the most interesting is the Baroque "Four Seasons". The hill is also associated with the legend of St. Adalbert's stay in Opole. Legend has it that when he ran out of water for baptism, a miraculous spring burst out here. Today, a well covered with a wrought-iron openwork dome stands in place of the spring.
