THE KŁODNICE SIPHON

A real treat for fans of engineering heritage is the Kłodnice Siphon in Lenartowice, which is a junction of waterways – the Gliwice Canal and the Kłodnica River, which flows under it. The siphon is a unique structure on a national scale

and an extremely rare hydrotechnical solution. The Kłodnica Siphon was created during the construction of the Gliwice Canal in the 1930s, when a solution had to be found during the design phase for the crossing of two watercourses. At that time, a special culvert was designed and built, consisting of three concrete pipes with a cross-section of 3 m², along with metal elements, which had to guarantee continuous operation. In 2018–2019, the siphon was modernised and refurbished, and it continues to serve its function today.
