"TRACES OF FAMOUS OPOLE RESIDENTS" ROUTE IN OPOLE

The "Trace of Famous Opole Inhabitants" route was created as part of the celebrations of the 800th anniversary of Opole. Many famous people are associated with Opole. Several of them have been honored with information plaques. So far, six names have been commemorated. These are individuals who made a special contribution to the city through their work:

Leo Baeck (at the intersection of Piastowska Street and Barlickego Street) – rabbi at Opole's new synagogue, famous for his efforts to build understanding between Judaism and Christianity;

Edmund Osmańczyk (corner of Osmańczyka and Rynku Streets) – publicist, political scientist, politician, activist of the National Union of Poles in Germany, author of the world's first

"Encyclopedia of International Affairs and the UN";

Theodor Kaluza (at Strzelców Bytomskich Street 9) – creator of the concept of the fifth dimension, the only scientist from Opole included in the list of the 60 greatest scientists of all time;

Emin Pasza (Helena Lehr Square) – real name Eduard Schnitzer, doctor, traveler, researcher of Sudan and East Africa, after converting to Islam became the Turkish Pasha of Albania;

Jerzy Grotowski (– Rynek 4) – theatre reformer, founded the Theatre of 13 Rzędów in Opole; Franz Waxman (at 1 Maja 6) – two-time Oscar winner and composer of music for over 200 films.

Each board contains a brief outline of the character in Polish, English and German and has a QR code that, when scanned with a smartphone, will take you to a website where you can read a more detailed biography of that character.
