CHURCH OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY IN KRAPKOWICE-OTMĘT

The first mentions of the parish and church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Otmęt in documents date to as early as 1223. According to records, until 1810 it was under the patronage of the Cistercians from Jemielnica.

The structure was likely built on the site of a former wooden church. The masonry temple was built in the early 14th century and was connected to a nearby castle. Over the years, the church has suffered numerous fires and been rebuilt many times. Shortly after World War II, in 1946, the church was rebuilt in the Neo-Baroque style, thanks to the efforts of the then parish priest, Prelate Franciszek Dusza. In the following years, the temple was gradually furnished and painted.

Nonetheless, small older elements of the Gothic architecture of the former church body and the stone tower have survived. It also features a neo-Gothic brick chapel from the mid-19th century, as well as church walls dating back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Another notable relic of the site is its Renaissance-era gravestones.
