Additional information

The first mentions regarding the Franciscan (Minorite) Church date back to 1285. After an extension and receiving a second aisle (south), it was reconsecrated. It was severely damaged in the great fire of Brzeg in 1494. Along with its renovation, a beautiful new net vault was added. In 1527 the Franciscans left the monastery, which was taken over by the town as a construction site (1557). Later, in return for the protection of St Nicolaus’ Church, the monastery was handed over to Duke George II (1582), who transformed it into an arsenal. Over the next few years, the Franciscan Church was significantly redeveloped on several occasions, which, e.g., introduced a division into storeys. In the 17th and 18th Centuries the roofs were lowered, in 1722 the Church walls were covered with plaster, and in 1844 the tower was redeveloped. In the 20th Century, the post-Franciscan Church served as a fire equipment warehouse (from 1930) and from 1946 it was used for storage. It was the owners’ duty to protect this historic structure. Unfortunately, nothing was done in this respect. As a result, the condition of the roof deteriorated considerably and leaks began to appear, leading to the degradation of the entire structure. This priceless House of God is now in ruins.
